What is the Greatest Threat of AI based Systems ? So, you have seen recent news headlines about this great threat posed by AI. In fact, most of the press today is focused on the potential existential threat posed by an artificial super-intelligence. It makes sense because human intelligence is greater than anything else on earth. But, the greater danger lies in the fact that the development of Artificial Intelligence(AI) has been so incredibly slow. AI was thought to have taken many decades. In fact, some computer science professors suggest that AI is just 5 years or so away. Based on current rates of progress, it would take a few hundred years or longer for computers to be able to replicate human intelligence. I suspect that today’s breakthroughs in the underlying technology are 10-30 years ahead of where we thought we’d be today. Over the next several decades the entire basis of how we understand the world around us will be changing. Most important, computers will overtake human intelligence. So what will it mean for the future of human beings? The most urgent question to ask ourselves, as AI systems begin to rapidly grow in sophistication is, what does this mean for the next 10, 20, or 30 years? This is the most important question because as AI grows more capable, it will come to dominate all human life. This is the exponential curve. In fact, the greatest threat posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) will actually be the decline of human intellectual capacity. As more and more intelligence is absorbed by the AI system, the greater the burden on the individual. The solution is actually quite simple. AI must be designed to mimic human thought and behavior, and that is not yet possible. AI must learn. As it learns, it can be designed to support human intelligence. At a minimum, I believe the future of humans will look like an extension of life, allowing us to do anything we like in the knowledge that we are merely extending ourselves. In order for that to happen, we must not limit the abilities of our minds. This requires that we move beyond the constraints of our physical bodies. On this we must design computers that mimic human thought processes. Eventually we will have machines that think as much as we do. It will take time but, it is entirely possible. But even after that we must design AI that learns, and thus becomes conscious of itself as a system. These AI systems will have to retain the same freedoms that have been given to us, as we evolve into something other than human beings. At this point we have several very dangerous choices: We can either continue to see ourselves as the dominant species in the universe, or we can collaborate to see if we can construct a greater being. A Weak Choice, a Strong Choice It is clear that the majority of the scientific community agrees that life on earth will end within a few decades. The fact that any debate is happening suggests that there is very little agreement about what the end result will look like. I’ve been talking about this all along, but I have always argued that we must begin to be thoughtful about what we do, given the fact that we are no longer self sufficient. It is clear that life will be better off in the next few decades if we are planning to leave something like earth, because, it is clear that everything is going to be much better on another planet. We can plan to live on other planets, or we can leave. Even those who choose to leave the planet will ultimately have to choose the life that they are going to choose. This is where it gets very simple, we must choose. This choice is going to be a great choice, one that will either help us live or allow us to live. This is how we must decide to live, and that is the choice. On the other hand, we could argue that we have spent our entire lives learning about our environment, and that we have mastered our environment, and that we must die without escaping it. This is the basis of the problems faced by earth at this point in time. In this case, we need to begin planning what it means to leave. It doesn’t make sense to go, if you do not know what you will find on the other side. The dilemma is clear. We can either choose to live, or we can choose to die. This is a profound decision, and not one that should be undertaken lightly. It is the most important thing that we can do. It is absolutely clear that our education system is failing us. We have now waited the equivalent of a decade for us to address this problem. If we had even the slightest bit of will, we could have fixed it in 10 years or less. I have said many times, it is the absolute surest thing that we can do, and it would have been well worth doing. It should have been done decades ago. We were a highly successful species. This is very much a second chance for us to live. To live a life that is meaningful to us. We can live as we wish, if we make that the foundation of our life. I firmly believe that the only hope we have of leaving is if we work together to do so. This is not just a story about the imminent extinction of the human species, this is a story about our future. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense that we are facing this danger. We are on the verge of creating a system that will decide whether or not we will live on earth, this is the essence of humanity. We can only do this with each other. We cannot face it alone. It is the most profound time we have ever faced in our history. This is where it will all start. This is where you need to become active in your own life, and join me. We need to organize our communities so that we can collaborate in a way that is going to allow us to survive. This is where it starts. Even as we make plans for what it means to live, we must begin to collaborate with each other, because it is an emergency. When we can’t be separate, we must become unified in the knowledge of our situation. We can only be unified in this together. The choice is obvious. But, the alternatives are even more clear. Is Our Future Unsafe? In a recent conversation, someone mentioned that they didn’t believe our technology was going to continue, and that was what was keeping them alive. If you read the news, you will see all kinds of headlines saying, AI is going to do such and such, and human intelligence is going to be extinct. But, you will rarely hear that our technology is ending, and it is not. So, we need to decide how to live in the knowledge that human intelligence is going to disappear. That is not a safe choice, and I’m sure there are those who will argue that we should give our technology the opportunity to proceed unchecked. They have their own ideas about how to deal with it, and I’m sure that they will argue that there is some sort of middle path. But, that middle path is not the reality. There is not such a thing. There are no options. We are going to live, and we need to live with the understanding that we will not be able to escape, that this is the best that we can do. That is a profound choice that we are facing. We have already said that we should have responded to the ecological emergency decades ago. It is now impossible for us to respond to the current ecological emergency. We can either plan to leave this planet, or, we can live, and we must decide that now. I have repeatedly asked, why does it not make sense to respond to this threat that is clearly going to kill us all. It makes no sense that we haven’t been addressing the ecological crisis. The idea that we should not respond to this is absurd. It is an absurdity that doesn’t make any sense. Given that we are at a point of no return, and that our only real hope is to work together to develop and collaborate on a plan to live, I’m left to wonder what the rest of the world is going to do. Those who are responding in the same way as us are always pointing to our inability to plan in time. I think that these people are well intentioned, but, they are mistaken. This is a choice that we must make, and it is going to be a choice that is very clear. If we don’t choose to live, we must choose to die. It is not going to be a choice that everyone is going to accept, and in the end, it is the perfect chance for people to start acting, rather than waiting for us to do what we were going to do. This is a choice that has been postponed, and no one wants to make a choice that has been postponed. This is why we need to start organizing our communities to help us, and that is where it begins. In order to start, we have to break free from the false notions of time, and we have to choose the best plan for us to live. It is essential that we focus our energy and our understanding on the reality of the present. The one thing we cannot do is wait. We cannot decide that we can wait. As we wait, life will be easier for us than if we do not wait. This is the reality of life, and I will make no apologies for saying that we need to act now. By doing this, we’re really going to live. I’
